Route Details

I had a work trip in Austin for a few days in February, but since it was my first time in Texas, I wanted to visit San Antonio too. We flew into Austin (since that’s where we were ending the trip) and drove to San Antonio. It wasn’t a terrible drive!

Day 1

  • Go Rio Boat Tour
  • Riverwalk
  • Arneson River Theatre
  • Main Plaza laser show

When we arrived we were lucky to get an early check in at our hotel – Hotel Valencia. It was a very unique hotel, and a great location on the Riverwalk. First, we needed to get some food, so we ate at Rita’s on the River. It was fine tex-mex, but not fabulous – we were desperate though! Next we took a Go Rio Boat Tour to get a good overview of the Riverwalk. It was pretty “meh.” Our tour guide was not very informative and I was not overwhelmed. Too bad, since they have a monopoly on the the boat tours! Then we walked to the Arneson River Theatre in La Villita Historic Arts Village – cute area! Next we went to dinner at Boudro’s, which was fabulous, and later at night saw the laser show on the cathedral in the Main Plaza. I would consider that a do-not-miss! It was fantastic and quite beautiful. The city was buzzing at night since it was the Super Bowl.

Day 2

  • The Alamo
  • Pearl District
  • Grotto on the Riverwalk
  • La Villita Historic Arts Village

We started Day 2 at The Alamo. Of course this is something you have to do in San Antonio. I really enjoyed the experience though! We had a good tour guide and learned a lot. Plenty to do and see within The Alamo for history buffs. We then went to the Pearl District for lunch, and walked down to the Riverwalk to see the Grotto. It’s such a nice area to walk around, especially when the weather is nice! We went back to La Villita Historic Arts Village to do some shopping. We did also briefly walk around the mall on the Riverwalk, to be inside for a while. We had drinks at the Hofbrauhaus, and then dinner at Casa Rio, a culinary must-do in San Antonio. We found the greatest martini bar after dinner – Soho Martini Bar. The bartender was fabulous and said he could make any dessert into a martini. I chose a lemon meringue pie martini! Highly recommend this bar.

We left the morning of Day 3 to drive to Austin.
