Twin Falls, Idaho

1 Day in Sep
North America

Route Details

  • Shoshone Falls
  • Perrine Coulee Falls
  • Balanced Rock
  • Thousand Springs State Park

Twin Falls is a 2-hour drive from Boise, and there are several unique things to see in this area. We drove from Boise and Shoshone Falls was our first stop. Unfortunately, they were working on the dam and the guy taking money for the parking lot ($3) let us know there was no water flowing at all. That was a pretty big bummer, because the falls look amazing. At least they were telling people so they didn’t waste a few dollars. Apparently they can stop diverting water to the falls after September 5.

Next we went to Perrine Coulee Falls, which is about 15 minutes from Shoshone. You can go to the top and/or bottom of the falls, and we went to the view of the top from behind the Canyon Crest Dining and Event Center. That allows you to see the falls, Snake River, and the Perrine Memorial Bridge. Really awesome view, and the best one in my opinion.

Next was Balanced Rock, which is about 30 minutes from Perrine Coulee. There is Balanced Rock State Park, but we just went to see Balanced Rock. If you’re coming from Twin Falls, you’ll pass the park on your left and then there is a sign and parking lot for the rock itself shortly up the road on the right. You can take a picture from the lot or walk all the way up to right below the rock. No more than 20-30 minutes needed.

We headed back to Boise and passed by Thousand Springs State Park, which we viewed from Route 30. There were lots of waterfalls along this stretch, and it would be a really neat area to kayak or canoe. Very picturesque. If we had more time, the Malad Gorge State Park is probably worth a stop. You pass over it while driving Route 84 from Boise to Twin Falls, so it is convenient but would have to have been our first stop.

I want to experience as much as possible when I go to a new place. The routes that I plan are usually packed full of exploring and finding the best hikes, food, sites, and experiences that I can’t get anywhere else. The idea of a staycation deeply saddens me, as the precious vacation time we get should be spent far away from home. Favorite city: Prague. Favorite tourist attraction: the temples of Angkor in Cambodia. Favorite “paradise” destination: Tahiti.
