Pigeon Forge & Gatlinburg, TN

8 Days in Jul
North America

Route Details

A week in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg was the perfect amount of time to get to see a lot, but there’s enough left to see if we ever want to make a return trip!

We rented a house in Seiverville, right next to Pigeon Forge, for a group of about 20. I think Pigeon Forge/Seiverville is a much-preferred area to stay, as opposed to Gatlinburg, because it’s not quite as crazy. There’s still a lot of traffic in Pigeon Forge, but Gatlinburg was even worse in my opinion.

Day 1

Drove from Cleveland to Cincinnati and spent the night there to cut the drive in half.

Day 2

  • Old Mill

After arriving in Pigeon Forge we had lunch at the Old Mill Restaurant. The food was excellent! We then checked into our house and spent the evening hanging out there.

Day 3

  • The Island

Our house had a private pool so we spent the majority of the day at the pool. We headed to The Island in Pigeon Forge around 3:00. There’s a lot of shopping and restaurants and it’s a cool place to walk around! We sampled moonshine at Old Smokey Moonshine Distillery. I would categorize that as a must-do. We watched the dancing fountains and then had an early dinner at Margaritaville. After dinner we hit one of the many arcades.

Day 4

  • Golf
  • Ripley’s Aquarium
  • Sugarlands Distilling Company
  • Ripley’s Odditorium

The next day we went to Gatlinburg. We started the morning with Hillbilly Golf. Since there are so many hills and mountains, many of the mini golf courses are built on the side of them. We had to take an incline up to the top and then worked our way down. Next we hit Ripley’s Aquarium. VERY crowded, but a great aquarium for kids. We had lunch at No Way Jose Cantina, right next door. Next, we walked down the main drag in Gatlinburg and had more moonshine at the Sugarlands Distilling Company. We had bought combo attraction passes at the aquarium so we also went to Ripley’s Odditorium while a rain storm passed. Not terribly excited, but some fun(ny) attractions. Dinner was at the house this evening.

Day 5

  • Gem Mining
  • Old Mill
  • Old Forge Distillery

We had a nice breakfast at Sawyer’s Farmhouse Restaurant, and then walked to the Three Bears General Store for souvenir shopping. They have live bears there, which we did not stop to see. Then we went next door to that, and did some gem mining. Next was another arcade. We spent some time walking around the Old Mill area after that, and sampled more moonshine (also should probably mention all the samples are free). We had a group dinner at Big Daddy’s Pizzeria & Arcade because they offer good group pricing on endless pizza.

Day 6

  • Great Smoky Mountains National Park
  • Dolly Parton’s Lumberjack Adventure

The group went in a lot of different directions this day! My husband and I went to the Smoky Mountain National Park and did a short walk to a waterfall. The Sugarlands Visitor Center also has a nice video to watch. We went to the Dolly Parton’s Lumberjack Adventure for the dinner and show. It’s a newer show, but I’m glad we went! It was entertaining and the food was really good.

Some of the group went to Dollywood this day, and some took a day trip to Asheville. All the activities seemed to be a hit!

Day 7

This day my husband and I had to work, so we weren’t able to do much during the day. We also had dinner at the house.

Day 8

We left on the last day around 12:00 for an 8 hour drive home. We stopped in Kentucky on the way home and had lunch at Colonel Sanders’ birthplace.

The house company we booked through was Backhome Log Cabins, and we rented Heavenly Sunrise (http://www.pigeonforgelogcabinrentals.com/heavenlysunrise12br.html). The cabins aren’t luxurious, but they’re nice, comfortable, huge, and the private pool was an exceptional bonus.
