Road Trip to Maine

7 Days in Jun
North America

Route Details

Day 1

Drove from Cleveland to Lodi, New York which is in the Finger Lakes region. Went to 3 wineries, the best one was Lamoreaux Landing. Stayed in Syracuse, just a little further than the Finger Lakes.

Day 2

  • Saratoga National Historical Park
  • Portsmouth

Delicious breakfast at Rise and Shine – instead of a burrito it was wrapped in a pancake. Drove to Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Stopped in Saratoga National Historical Park along the way, lots of walking/biking paths and a good place to break up the drive and get out for a few. Explored Portsmouth on foot in the evening. Portsmouth Brewery was really good, highly recommend. Only had drinks. The cheapest Priceline option was in Andover, Massachusetts, which wasn’t in the right direction but could be a nice stop if you’re near Boston.

Day 3

  • Scarborough Beach State Park

Drove from Andover to route 1 to drive along the coast up Maine. Stopped at Scarborough Beach State Park – very nice. All of the public beaches were packed. The water was freezing but it was a nice enough weather day to spend reading/wading on the beach. Lobster roll and clam roll from a shack on the side of road, both great. Continued up the coast to Bangor. Was the closest we could get to Acadia with a reasonable price since we booked everything last-minute. Bangor was underwhelming, not much of a reason to stay/visit.

Day 4

  • Acadia National Park
  • Ocean Path
  • Bass Harbor Light House

Breakfast in Bar Harbor (Independent Coffee Shop) and went to Acadia. Ended up doing the whole Park Loop Road over the course of the day and stopped to walk the Ocean Path – pretty crowded but great views. Parked at Thunder Hole, walked to Otter Point and then back again. Wanted to get away from the crowds so we drove to Bass Harbor to check out the lighthouse, very pretty. Had a lobster dinner at Thurston’s Lobster Pound, which was phenomenal. It’s close to Bass Harbor, right on the water in Bernard. Then back to Bangor.

Day 5

  • Schoodic Peninsula
  • Freeport

The Schoodic area was recommended by someone we chatted with along the Ocean Path. It’s a longer drive to get to Schoodic Point but it’s still part of Acadia. So beautiful and worth it – didn’t see anyone else for the first couple of hours. There is an old military base turned into a research facility that you can explore – almost made us feel like we were in the show “Lost.” Highly recommend this area for people who want to be off the beaten path/away from the crowds. You can see Mount Desert Island and Cadillac Mountain from here. Favorite part of the trip.

Drove to Freeport (20 minutes north of Portland) to stay at the White Cedar Inn (great omelets!). Ate dinner at The Front Room in Munjoy Hill, a suburb of Portland. Great food, really nice place.

Day 6

  • L.L. Bean
  • Portland
  • Kennebunkport
  • Wells Beach

Shopped at L.L. Bean then drove to Portland for lunch, walked around harbor area. Ate at The Standard Bakery and Duck Fat – both really good. Drove to Kennebunkport, stopped at a winery that a friend owns and walked around the water area. Had a little time left to spend on a beach so we stopped at Wells Beach. Got there around 5 PM so we didn’t have to pay to park. Any earlier and you do have to pay. Strolled along the coast, nice way to end the fun part of the trip. Drove to Worcester, Massachusetts to knock off some time for the drive home the next day.

Day 7

Rest of the way back to Cleveland.

We decided to go on this trip about 4 days before we left, so things were put together quickly. Everywhere we stayed was close to the destination, but not at the destination since prices were high and availability was limited. We considered going somewhere closer to home but I’m very glad we chose to go to Maine. We want to go back to see more of Acadia in the future.
