Camping in the Adirondacks

4 Days in Oct
North America

Route Details

We were fortunate enough to get reservations at camp site #32 at the Indian Lake Island Campground in the Adirondacks for the last camping weekend of the year. #32 is an island in the middle of the lake and is the best place to stay in the entire area. There were several different groups that we met during our time there that were jealous when they found out we were staying. There is only space for 3 tents on the island. We booked in July and there aren’t a lot of campsites in general, so make sure you book well in advance.

We started the drive from Cleveland after work and stopped in Buffalo for the night (3 hours). Then drove 4.5 hours to the campground the next morning. The island is only accessible by boat or canoe, so we rented a canoe and paddled 3 miles (90 minutes).

One day we paddled back to the mainland and hiked to Watch Point (Watch Hill) and had lunch, then paddled back. Another day it rained so we just stayed on the island and played in the woods. The canoe rides back to the mainland were a little tough because you’re going against the current.

October was the perfect time to go – the foliage was beautiful and the weather was ideal for camping.
