Route Details

  • Great Smoky Mountains National Park
  • Charlies Bunion
  • Appalachian Trail
  • Clingman’s Dome
  • Gatlinburg

Drove into the park from Knoxville and wanted to do a good, somewhat lengthy day hike. Decided on Charlies Bunion since it’s on the Appalachian Trail, and who doesn’t want to say they’ve been on that? Park at Newfound Gap (on Google Maps), it’s 4 miles each way and the view from the end is definitely worth it. Not a very strenuous hike though, so I would say it’s fine for all ages/types of hikers.  Then drove to the parking lot for Clingman’s Dome, which is about 15-20 minutes from Newfound Gap. The trail up to the dome is paved but pretty steep, and there were some people that had to stop on the way up to take a break. The view is nice, but kind of sad to see all the dying trees in the area. Headed back to Knoxville and went through Gatlinburg (came in the other way). I know a lot of people love that city, but we found it to be the most tacky, touristy place to ever drive through. The traffic was unbelievable, so that only made it less likeable. I thought we picked well for our day hike and the only thing I would have done differently is drive back out the way we came. Also, Great Smoky National Park is free, which is pretty awesome and rare for a national park.

I want to experience as much as possible when I go to a new place. The routes that I plan are usually packed full of exploring and finding the best hikes, food, sites, and experiences that I can’t get anywhere else. The idea of a staycation deeply saddens me, as the precious vacation time we get should be spent far away from home. Favorite city: Prague. Favorite tourist attraction: the temples of Angkor in Cambodia. Favorite “paradise” destination: Tahiti.
