Route Details

Day 1

  • Makapu’u Lighthouse
  • Koko Head Crater
  • North Shore
  • Turtle Beach
  • Waimea Bay
  • Byodo-In Temple

At the end of a work trip and I had one and a half free days. Stayed near Waikiki and did a lot of driving to try and fit in as much as possible, so I don’t know that I’d recommend this as an exact route for anyone else. Started the day early and drove to Kailua at 6 AM to meet a friend and get some lilikoi pancakes at Moke’s Bread and Breakfast. Drove down from Kailua to Makapu’u Lighthouse trail, which is a beautiful drive down the coast. You pass Kailua, Lanikai and Waimenalo beaches which are all stunning. Get out and take some pictures or go swimming if you can. Did the lighthouse trail, which is paved the whole way and worth it – about an hour, maybe a little more. Good for families. Drove to Koko Head to go up the stairs/tramway. Took about an hour to go up, take some pictures and take a breather and get back down. Beautiful views of Hanauma Bay from the top, and you can see Diamond Head in the distance. Had to drop coworker off at airport, then drove up to the North Shore (one hour). Stopped at Turtle Beach but didn’t have any luck. Locals said the sea was too rough. Drove to Waimea Bay to jump off the rock, highly recommend. Then went back south to visit Byodo Temple. It’s $3 to get in, worth it. Beautiful temple with mountains in the backdrop, don’t need more than an hour total. Back to Kailua to get dinner at Crepes No Ka Oi (delicious) and called it a night.

Day 2

  • Olomana Peaks
  • Nu’uanu Pali Lookout

Met up with another couple my wife and I had met on a previous trip for a hike to at least the first of the 3 Olomana Peaks. Parking is a little tricky as you have to find a (legal) spot near the entrance to the Royal Hawaiian golf course to get to the trailhead and walk down their driveway. You’ll see a sign on your left that marks the start of the trail. We ended up doing the first 2 peaks and I really wanted to do the 3rd but time didn’t allow. Next time. Great hike, some sketchy areas for sure but excellent views. Took us about 3 hours and change. Drove to Nu’uanu Pali Lookout – extremely windy and equally touristy but nice views. Grabbed lunch at Diamond Head Grille, a local favorite with a great salmon plate and desserts. Then flew home.

I want to experience as much as possible when I go to a new place. The routes that I plan are usually packed full of exploring and finding the best hikes, food, sites, and experiences that I can’t get anywhere else. The idea of a staycation deeply saddens me, as the precious vacation time we get should be spent far away from home. Favorite city: Prague. Favorite tourist attraction: the temples of Angkor in Cambodia. Favorite “paradise” destination: Tahiti.
