Oahu and Maui

12 Days in May
North America

Route Details

Day 1

  • Waialua area for surfing
  • lunch at Joe’s – good stuff, overlooked harbor. Good short ribs and pina coladas.

Day 2

  • Waimea falls, good for average person, touristy, costs to get back in there. Tourist trap.

Day 3

  • Polynesian cultural center, great for kids. Thought it was expensive but includes luau buffet-style. Wouldn’t do it again b/c of the price.

Day 4

  • Stairway to Heaven hike

Day 5

  • More surfing on north shore.
  • Great breakfast at Cafe Haleiwa, which is owned by Duncan Campbell.

Day 6

  • All beaches were closed. If you want to see the Bonzai Pipeline, park at the school across the street. When beaches are closed, surf is huge, this is where the pros go.
  • We booked a helicopter tour through Paradise Helicoptors. $160 pp, only 20 mins though. Never been in a helicopter, thought it was pretty cool. Flew over wailua falls, not legal to get back there. Goes over Waimea falls. Scenic view of Seven Mile Miracle, all the surf spots on the north shore.
  • 2 places to catch helicoptors, north shore and Waikiki.
  • Lunch at Lei Lei’s
  • Drinks at Turtle Bay Resort. Had a good time by the pool bar.

We spent the first 6 nights at an AirBnB beach rental near the Seven Mile Miracle, then headed down to Waikiki Sheraton for a couple nights.

Day 7

  • Catamaran cruise, bought a Groupon BOGO.
  • Dinner at Tanaka hibachi restaurant. Great but expensive.

Day 8

  • Breakfast at Maui brewing. Great breakfast drinks. Breakfast pizza, tacos, all good.
  • Mai Tais at Trump Tower.
  • Sunset by the Duke Kahanamoku statue
  • Work meeting before we flew over to Maui the following morning.

Day 9

  • The Road to Hana. Get the Shaka Guide app for $6, does use data on phone but tells you everything on the Road to Hana.
  • 3 bears waterfall (AKA Upper Waikani Falls)
  • Red sand beach
  • Black sand beach
  • Took scenic route home, most rental cars won’t let you go back. Be careful of locals as they drive very fast, lots of turns. Your credit card may cover the insurance.
  • Dinner at Charley’s, friend of Willie Nelson’s. Excellent sushi bar, excellent menu.

Day 10

  • Kite surfing at Kite Beach Maui.

Day 11

  • Looked for sea shells at Baldwin Beach Park.
  • Lunch at a local fish market, excellent for the price.
  • Shopping at Wings Hawaii – local goods.
  • Dinner and happy hour at The Inn at Mama’s Fish House. Make reservations, guys wear collared shirts.

Day 12

  • Kapalua Cliff House, jumped off cliffs. Easy to get to, entry level for cliff jumping.
  • Fabric shopping
  • High surf that day, went to see Jaws Surf Break (AKA Peahi). 30 min drive from where we were, not the best of views. Not really worth it.
  • Pizza at Flatbread Company in Paia, where we stayed.

We stayed all nights on Maui at the Paia Inn, $135/night. Town shuts down pretty early on weekdays. Rock & Brews is good place to get beer. Above average hot pretzel.

Don’t feel the need to go back to oahu, would definitely go back to Maui. Island hoppers are great, fly into one island, go to another fly back.
