Route Details

  • Santorini Greek Kitchen
  • Indianapolis Canal Walk
  • White River State Park

I flew into Indianapolis and drove to Santorini Greek Kitchen (15 minutes) for dinner. It’s no longer in business as a restaurant, which is sad because it was possibly the best Greek meal I’ve ever had. They had a platter with all the favorites, and it was probably meant for 3-4 people but I ate it all. They do still cater, so if you have the opportunity to get some of their food I would highly recommend it.

I felt so full (terrible) afterwards and needed a place to walk it off, and luckily downtown has the Canal Walk that was perfect. It’s about 1.5 miles from end to end, and I parked for free on the street around West 12th Street and MLK Boulevard. That’s close to one end, and I walked the entire way to the other end at White River State Park, which is a beautiful area where lots of people were just sitting on the grass and admiring the view of the river. That area is also called the Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance Lawn and they have concerts there in the summer. The zoo is right across the river from there, too.

The best view along the canal is from the N West St bridge looking east, as the canal’s backdrop are the taller buildings in the city. There are lots of restaurants, gardens and green areas along the canal. It was very new and clean and a really neat area, one of those places that you’d like to live for a year or so.

On the way to my hotel I happened to pass by Lucas Oil Stadium (where the Colts play), which is less than a mile from White River State Park. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is less than 15 minutes away from downtown – everything seems very close and accessible, and I wouldn’t mind returning to Indianapolis someday to spend more time.

I want to experience as much as possible when I go to a new place. The routes that I plan are usually packed full of exploring and finding the best hikes, food, sites, and experiences that I can’t get anywhere else. The idea of a staycation deeply saddens me, as the precious vacation time we get should be spent far away from home. Favorite city: Prague. Favorite tourist attraction: the temples of Angkor in Cambodia. Favorite “paradise” destination: Tahiti.
