Glacier National Park, MT

8 Days in Jul
North America

Route Details

Day 1 Arrival

-My brother, sister-in-law, parents, and I flew into Missoula.  We rented a car and drove to Whitefish, where we rented a cabin.  The drive was about 2 hours long.  My husband flew into Kalispell later that night, which was less than 30 minutes from Whitefish.

-We settled into the cabin and went to Piggyback BBQ for dinner.  If you want some delicious BBQ, this is the place to go!  Delicious food, good service, and included indoor and outdoor seating.  I believe they have live music on some nights.

Day 2 Going To The Sun Road and Iceburg Lake

-We woke up early to explore Glacier National Park.  We drove on the Going To The Sun Road.  It was a really neat route filled with hairpin curves, cliffs, waterfalls, etc.  It was a beautiful first glimpse of the park!  We went to the trailhead for Iceburg Lake, which is an 8 mile hike round trip.  This hike was moderate, but all six of us made it with little difficulty.  It was a pretty hot day, but we kept cool by drinking a lot of water and splashing in the waterfalls.  Although we were pretty tired when we got to the lake, the view was absolutely breathtaking!  It is a must to take your hiking boots off and dip your toes in the water!  If you are brave enough, my husband and I also dunked our whole bodies into the lake.  It was a once and a lifetime opportunity, so we couldn’t pass it up-even though we were numb for a few minutes afterward!  We were pretty sore after we finished the hike, but it was definitely worth it.

-We stopped at the Whistle Stop to grab some huckleberry milkshakes and dinner.  This restaurant was very interesting…We had to climb through a window to get to the outside seating area.  The bathroom was also located through the kitchen!  The food was decent, but we probably wouldn’t go back.

Day 3 Paddleboarding

-We were still a little tired from our hike the day before, so we decided to go to the lake by the cabin.  We rented some paddleboards and played in the lake for the afternoon.  We spent the evening playing cards in the cabin.

Day 4 Whitewater Rafting

-We booked a rafting trip/dinner cruise with Wild River Adventures.  This was an absolute blast!  We spent an hour or two going down the river in a big raft that included a guide.  Our guide was extremely fun!  They tend to gear the adventure based on the group.  My husband, brother, and I are adventure seekers, so he allowed us to have a little more fun-i.e. spinning the raft, going toward the rapids, jumping off the boat, “riding the bull”, etc.  When we got to the end of the trip, the guide cooked us a delicious meal that was very filling.  He wouldn’t allow us to help, so we were able to hang out by the river and relax.  I would definitely recommend this company and the dinner cruise.

-We explored Whitefish that evening.  The shops were fun if you were looking for some souvenirs.  Some of the bars were really neat and most of the places had live bands.

Day 5 Kayak to Wild Horse Island

-We rented some kayaks from a company to paddle over to Wild Horse Island.  We were told it was a quick/easy paddle over to the island and we would have a guide with us.  Both of these pieces of information were not true!  It took quite awhile to paddle to the island and the choppy water made it a little more difficult.  When we got there, there was not a place to dock the boats.  We eneded up pulling them ashore, even though signs said that it was a private dock.  We were in desperate need for some lunch and a rest!  We spent about an hour eating lunch and hiking to the top of the hill.  We saw sheep and deer, no horses…We headed back to the mainland because we were a little worried about getting  back before dark.  When we got back, we found out that the trip was a 7 mile round trip paddle!  Not quite what we had in mind…

Day 6 Avalanche Lake

-We hiked to Avalanche Lake.  This trail is very well maintained and does not include drastic slopes.  It was a fairly easy hike.  Avalanche Lake is surrounded by mountains and gorgeous waterfalls.  The water was a beautiful blue/green.  Definitely worth the hike!

-We ate at the Bulldog Saloon that evening.  The burgers were very good, but the ambiance was not very family friendly.  The tables were dirty, service was lacking, and the bathrooms were plastered with naked men/women (depending on the bathroom).

Day 7 Aerial Adventure

-For our adventure of the day, we went to a ski resort and did the aerial adventure.  This is a treetop obstacle course.  It has different levels of difficulty.  If you enjoy a challenge and adventure, this is a definite must!  But don’t worry, if you freeze, they will come get you 🙂

Day 8 Departure

-Spent the morning in Missoula at an outdoor art show.  The products were great!
