Route Details

Took a day trip to NYC with my Mom. It was a chartered bus trip that left our town in Ohio around 9 pm, traveled through the night (stopping twice for breaks) and arrived in Battery Park around 8 am. At the end of the day (around 9 pm) the bus picked us up at Times Square and headed home.

  • Battery Park & Statue of Liberty
  • Bowling Green Park & Wall Street Bull
  • Trinity Cathedral
  • Brooklyn Bridge
  • Park Row
  • China Town
  • Little Italy
  • Rockefeller Center
  • Times Square

Battery Park, Bowling Green & Trinity:
Disembarked at Battery park, walked around and took some photos of Statue of Liberty. We opted out of taking the ferry to Ellis Island & Liberty Island, since we didn’t have a lot of time. Walked up through Bowling Green Park & saw the Wall Street Bull. This is NYC’s oldest public park – established in 1733, before American independence! We stopped at Bean & Bean on corner of Broadway and Rector St. for a coffee & pastry breakfast. Went into Trinity Church and lit a candle for my grandfather, took a couple photos of their amazing stained glass.

Brooklyn Bridge, Chinatown & Little Italy:
Continued on up Broadway through Park Row, which is gorgeous and contains City Hall. Passed by & saw the Brooklyn Bridge, but we didn’t cross it or linger there. I was happy enough admiring it for a few minutes and grabbing a photo. We walked through Chinatown, where we spent way too much time shopping – I bought a knockoff purse. After that we headed to Little Italy seeking our lunch. Walking around this area at lunchtime is crazy, there were mobs of people everywhere and amazing smells wafting around. We decided to try out the famous Lombardi’s, but we didn’t have a reservation and there was a lunch rush. We ended up bailing on waiting for a table and ordered meatballs and beer from the bar area. Advice: Lombardi’s accepts cash only, so make sure you have some on you if you go here. If you have time, get a pizza. The meatballs were good but the pizza is what makes Lombardi’s famous.

Rockefeller Center & Times Square:
We walked to the Allen Street Station and hopped on a bus to 1st Avenue. From there we walked to Rockefeller Center. The bus didn’t save us much time, its about a 40 min ride and then a 6 block walk, but it was nice to rest our feet a little. If you want to walk all the way from Lombard’s to Rockefeller, its only 3 miles and takes about an hour on foot via Broadway and 5th Ave. Spent a little time in Rockefeller Center, stopped at nearby Magnolia Bakery for a FANTASTIC cupcake, then went on to Times Square. Wandered around Times Square a little and went into the popular Macy’s there. Had street-vendor food for dinner before boarding the bus home.

Misc Stuff:

To save money we avoided cabs, but I regret this since we didn’t end up having time to see Central Park.

We also got to see, but not stop at, Ground Zero. (It was still closed and under construction at the time of our trip)

Consider investing in a Banjees Wrist wallet  (http://sprigs.com/banjees/) – You can keep cash,  your phone and valuables tucked against your skin with this thing, and it was very comfortable. I also carried a shoulder bag with a sweater, some water, etc. But I felt much safer having the valuables secure under my sleeve.
