Route Details

Day 1 – 14

  • Snorkeling off the Beaches
    • Went to multiple beaches and bays from Honolua down to Olowalu.
      • Blackrock was the easiest, but the most congested. As soon as you come across a turtle enjoy those two seconds because they get bum rushed by everyone around. Be prepared to get kicked or have someone swim right into you because of the waves.
      • The best snorkeling we had was just north of Blackrock. Get in the water at Honoapiilani Park Access Road and snorkel south to Kahekili Beach Park. The ocean is practically yours until you get to Kahekili. There is coral, sea turtles, all the colorful fish, eels, sea urchins, and octopuses. If the current is too strong to swim back there is a boardwalk that will take you back with places to stop for food and drinks.
  • Snorkeling Excursions
    • www.hawaiioceanrafting.com – One of the highlights of the trip we found by chance. A rescue raft takes you across the Auau channel to snorkel multiple stops around Lanai.  One was Sweetheart Rock and we were able to snorkel around it. Stopped in a pod of Spinner Dolphins jumping and spinning out of the water. This tour was well worth it.
    • Molokini Crater – we took a larger charter here and after the Lanai trip we were let down. I thought Blackrock was crowded then we came here. It’s like the New York City of snorkeling.  The stretch of beach mentioned above was much better in terms of sea life compared to this place. At least in our experiance.
    • There is a rafting tour (Blue Water Rafting) out of Kihei that will let you drift snorkel the back side of the crater if the conditions allow it. We should have done this instead.
  • Haleakalā Sunrise – We left pretty early for this since we were coming from Ka’anapali, and weren’t sure how long it would take. We got there about 2 1/2 hours before the sunrise and were the only ones there. It was amazing having the place to our self for a good hour. Skip the observatory side with the short wall and take the trail to the ridge on the other side. The views will be better and you might be spared from everyone getting selfies.
  • Warren & Annabelle’s in Lahaina – Slight of hand magic and comedy show in a small theater, maybe 60 people max.  They have a dinner/drinks and show package or you can just go for the show. The meal can easily be split between 2 people for no extra charge. The show  was very funny and entertaining.
  • Air Maui – Helicopter tour – Great experience to see remote areas of the island. You can get discounted tickets through Costco and just show them on your phone.
  • Maui Ocean Center – perfect place to go if you get a bad weather day. The gift shop has some of the best authentic souvenirs, this is the place to get something for someone.
  • Dining –
    • Slappy Cakes – great place for breakfast but go early. We walked right in at 7:15 am, no wait and fast service but leaving at 8:30 the place was packed with at least a 45 minute wait. Also no drinks until after 8:00 am.
    • Leilani’s on the Beach – amazing food and atmosphere right on Ka’anapali beach/boardwalk. Expensive but worth it.
    • Maui Tacos – looked sketchy and we almost didn’t eat there, but was good take out Mexican food.
    • Amigo’s Maui – another Mexican restaurant that was very good in Lahaina.
    • CJ’s Diner – good spot with lots of variety.
    • Pizza Paradiso – really good pizza.
    • Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice – if you’re in Hawaii you need to have it, mutiple times. My wife would have ate it everyday if she could.
  • Costco – saved us a lot of money for this trip. The rental vehicle through Costco travel, the Air Maui tickets, groceries, and gas. Two fill ups alone covered the the cost of the membership.
