Disney World and Daytona Beach

Route Details

Day 1

  • Disney Springs

Arrived in the evening, stayed at the Hilton in Disney Springs. Beautiful place. Walked to Disney Springs, connected by a bridge. It’s an outdoor shopping area with restaurants and shops. Lots for families to do, but maybe geared a little more towards adults. Had dinner at Chef Art Smith’s Homecoming – southern style cooking. Got the fried chicken, which was great. I got a chopped salad which was a bad move. Was just ok and I could have gotten the same thing elsewhere for cheaper. But the crab dip with homemade pita chips -the pita chips were phenomenal.

Day 2

  • Hollywood Studios
  • Epcot
  • Magic Kingdom

Checked out of hotel, walked to Disney Springs and had breakfast at Wolfgang Puck’s Express – good. Travel sites told us not to take the bus from the hotel to the parks, but I have no idea why and wish we would have done that. We went to the bus station, but those busses only take you to resorts. Ended up going to a resort, then catching another bus to Hollywood Studios. Hollywood-vibe, lots of Star Wars stuff. You are able to get alcohol in this park.

Took a boat to Epcot for dinner, free but multiple stops (45 minutes). One thing we learned: check the schedules for the parks. We wanted to finish the day at Magic Kingdom, but found out it was closing early at 7 for a private party. Left Epcot immediately. Had hot dogs and fries at Casey’s Corner and parked it in front of Cinderella’s Castle for the show. They had a parade come through first then the light show about 20 minutes after, and it was great. Magic Kingdom does not have alcohol readily available.

Bummed that we didn’t get to spend time at Epcot – we’ve been there before and love it because of the food and around-the-world style. If I had kids, I would skip Epcot. I don’t’ know how people do the parks for an entire week. It’s pretty exhausting so I’d recommend a couple days at parks then head to the beach.

Drove to Daytona Beach (1 hour 15 minutes) for the next 4 nights at a condo.

Days 3-6 Daytona and Ormond

Daytona is a really great, affordable city to do nothing in. Couple things to note: it does have some gimmicky attractions with the boardwalk and chain restaurants (think spring break) and they do have smoking in restaurants. Ormond Beach is really close and a classier version of Daytona (think the older brother that started a job). We split time between the two and some of the places we ate were:

  • Riptides Raw Bar and Grill – has all you can eat crab legs and beer towers. This experience/meal is one of the main reasons we love Daytona.
  • Grind Gastropub – had been there before and weren’t blown away. We were confused why it was so popular on Yelp and Urbanspoon so decided to give it another try. The tiki bar out back is why, and it was awesome. Good live music too.
  • Peach Valley Café – best brunch in the world. Get the apple fritters.
  • Stonewood Grill – good steak and seafood in Ormond Beach.

Spirit and Frontier have really good deals from Cleveland to Orlando: we flew for $70 per person.
