Honeymoon in paradise: French Polynesia - Moorea

7 Days in Jun
Australia/Oceania

Route Details

NOTE: I highly recommend using a travel agent who often books trips to French Polynesia. You won’t regret it. They will have insight and expertise that will make your trip a lot easier. We used Jennifer Fried  (contact info: phone: 440.602.5949  email: [email protected]   website: www.traveline.com)

Also – save yourself some googling and comparing of resorts and just book the Sofitel resort on Moorea. This was by far the best resort to stay at for MANY reasons. We decided to book this resort and everyone on the island told us that was the best choice. We discovered this to be true as well. The water here is the most gorgeous on the island. The staff is kind and sweet. There is a home-y feel at this resort, rather than a tourist-y one. We absolutely loved it. We visited the other resorts, so you can trust this opinion. The Intercontinental Moorea was very beautiful, but VERY commercialized feel. I am SO happy we stayed at Sofitel.

Another tip: All food is extremely expensive, so just factor that in when planning your trip. Plan on an extra $1,000 for just food. Every meal (even lunch) is minimum $40 per person. It’s crazy, but it’s worth it because this place is paradise. We booked all our breakfasts beforehand at the resort, so those were always included, but the lunches and dinners we’re always so expensive…whether we ate at the resort or off the resort.

Day 1 (Saturday): Tahiti

  • We landed in the Papeete airport on the island of Tahiti at 9:30 pm
  • Our public transfer was waiting for us (booked by the travel agent) when we arrived.
  • Transfer took us to the Intercontinental Resort on Tahiti where we spent the night.

Day 2 (Sunday): Travel to Moorea

  • We woke up and had breakfast at our resort around 7 am
  • Our transfer (booked by travel agent) took us to the ferry port so we could board our ferry to Moorea around 8:30 am.
  • We took the ferry over to Moorea (about a half hour boat ride)
  • When we arrived at the ferry port, another transfer took us to our resort, Sofitel.
  • When we arrived at Sofitel, we couldn’t check in right away, so we went to the beach and chilled. The water was beautiful and we ran right in.
  • At noon, we went to the Sunday Polynesian brunch buffet at the resort restaurant. SO much food! Polynesian musicians serenaded us. Then, there was a Polynesian show which was really fun. The brunch was $70 per person, but we felt like it was worth it.
  • We checked into our rooms early since they were ready. We booked an overwater bungalow for 6 nights. Words cannot describe how beautiful this was.
  • We unpacked and chilled in our rooms for awhile.
  • We went to the rental place on the resort beach and checked out snorkeling gear (included with the resort) and used these the whole week.
  • We went snorkeling right off our room deck. The water and fish were beautiful, I can’t even describe how amazing.
  • We we’re so tired by 5 pm b/c of the time difference, so we just ordered room service and fell asleep around 6:30 pm

Day 3 (Monday): First full day in Moorea

  • Breakfast at the resort
  • Snorkeling at the resort
  • Rented bikes from the resort and biked 5 miles to eat lunch at Moorea Beach Cafe (would highly recommend…very good food!)
  • Biked back to the resort and chilled by the pool
  • Ordered room service again

Day 4 (Tuesday): Land adventures

  • Booked at ATV tour through Albert Tours. They took us all over the island on ATV’s. Magic Mountain was the coolest! We 100% recommend doing this excursion!
  • Dinner at Le Mahogany – we would NOT recommend this. It was extremely average food and not a cool atmosphere either. They will pick you up from your resort however, so you don’t have to worry about transportation.

Day 4 (Wednesday): Sharks & Rays – my FAVORITE!!!

  • Sharks and rays tour
  • Polynesian dinner show at Sofitel

We booked a sharks and rays tour through a man named Jiro for this on Sunday when we were at the ferry port. Everyone told us he was unreliable and sometimes didn’t pick people up for this, but it worked out great for us. We had a WONDERFUL time. The boat took us all around the island. Then we stopped at a tiny island and snorkeled and ate a delicious lunch. Our last stop was in the middle of the lagoon where we swam with reef sharks and rays. It was SO fun. Scary at first, but they were so harmless.

Day 5 (Thursday): Rent-a-car day

  • Rented a car and drove around the perimeter of the island (about 40 miles)
  • Stopped at Albert’s Pearl Shop and got some Tahitian black pearls (it’s the only place in the world you can buy these…they have black pearl farms here.)
  • Stopped at Intercontinental Resort to swim with a dolphin (would not recommend doing this. Overpriced and not worth it one bit!!)
  • Drove to Holy Steak House for dinner. Very cool view and atmosphere. The food was good, but not great. I would still recommend it for the experience

Day 6 (Friday): Waterfall tour

  • Waterfall Tour with Yvette’s crew – SO fun! We hiked to 2 waterfalls and swam in the pools underneath of them
  • Fresh fruit tasting after the hike with Yvette’s crew.
  • Dinner on the beach at the K restaurant at Sofitel. Because of the windy day this night, we didn’t get the normal beach dinner, but we did still get to sit out on the beach, but they put up wind tents to block the wind from us. Very delicious 3 course dinner! Great end to our trip.

Google Moorea VIP tours and FOR SURE book this when you go here. You will not regret it. Yvette is so knowledgeable of Moorea’s land and it’s super interesting to hear all she has to say about the land during this hike.

Day 7 (Saturday): The day we left…saddest day ever

  • Ate breakfast at the resort
  • Checked out of our room around noon
  • Went back to the beach and paddleboarded for awhile. Then we ate at the pool bar at the resort for lunch.
  • Took a transfer to Moorea ferry dock at around 4:00 pm
  • Took a transfer back to Papeete where we waited for our flight.
