San Francisco Day Trip

  • Muir Woods National Monument
  • Marin Headlands
  • Golden Gate Bridge
  • Alamo Square
  • Blackwood Restaurant

Picked up rental car around 10 AM and drove straight to Muir Woods – took almost an hour but there was a construction delay just before the Golden Gate Bridge. Lot was full, so had to take the shuttle which was $5 per person. Saw a lot of people taking the chance of finding a parking spot, but it’s almost 30 minutes to get to the entrance from the shuttle stop. So if it says the lot is full and you go anyways and don’t find a spot (which unless you got extremely lucky, there weren’t any), you’ve wasted probably over an hour. Spent a few hours walking through Muir Woods, mostly looking up the whole time. Fascinating trees.

Drove to the Marin Headlands, which are accessed from Alexander Road just north of the Golden Gate Bridge. Packed because there aren’t too many parking spots, but it’s worth waiting for one to open up. The view and photo opportunities of the bridge with the city in the background are awesome.

Then headed back over the bridge to go to Alamo Square (see the row of houses from Full House called The Painted Ladies) and the Mrs. Doubtfire house before eating dinner at Blackwood (Thai food – great meal). Returned car at airport then took shuttle to nearby hotel for an early morning flight out. Couldn’t really have fit much more into the day and definitely glad we got a rental car. Felt like it was a great way to spend our time in the area. In December we were fine in a long sleeve shirt or hoodie.
