Tokyo, Japan

8 Days in Apr
Asia

Route Details

My family and I spent 8 days around Tokyo and these were some of our favorite places and things.

  • Electric City (Akihabara) – this is the area with all the electronic stores and neon lights, what you envision when you think of Japanese downtown with tons of bright lights. Almost Times Square-esque. Very cool place to spend an afternoon or whole day.
  • Kawaii Monster café – Kawaii basically means anything cute. In this café, each room has a different theme. Shops and restaurants can be categorized as “Kawaii.”
  • Harajuku is a district and a fashion style that is very distinct. You’ll see lots of people dressed in bright colors and fabrics, wigs, etc. Lots of shops with that kind of apparel in the district.
  • You can rent Mario Kart-like cars and drive on the streets. Very American thing to do, as you can even dress up like the characters, but was a blast. Big in Akihabara, but can find in other areas as well.
  • Toyota Mega Web – showcase in Tokyo where you can see all their futuristic cars. Really neat experience, they let you get in the cars.
  • The Ghibli Museum – awesome place but have to get tickets way in advance. Have to get them from an authorized seller, lots of scams for tickets. They don’t let you take pictures, which is a bummer.
  • They have typical American fast food places, but it’s interesting to see what else is on the menu at McDonald’s, Taco Bell, etc.
  • Stopped at the restaurant (Gonpachi Nishiazabu) that was in Kill Bill.

General Tips

  • Download the Google Translate app so you can scan menus and signs. Lots of restaurants did not have English translations.
  • We rented a hotspot at the airport to have internet everywhere on the trip. It worked out really well.
  • Public transportation was great, didn’t need a rental car. A lot of the subway stations have really popular places to eat and shop, so people just go there even if they’re not using the subway.
  • We caught the very last days of the Cherry Blossom season, which was awesome. The season depends on what area of the country you’re in, but it was ending it mid-April in Tokyo.
  • You do not need to tip for food/service.
