Route Details

Day 1

We drove in from Long Beach, arrived at 3 PM and went straight to the Ranger Station. Hadn’t reserved anything in advance. Ranger helped us plan a trip for 3 nights. We hiked west to east, starting at the Wildcat Canyon Trail (6 miles total). Go there at 5, hiked an hour to Northgate Pass and set up camp. Had dinner and plotted our trek for the next day.

Day 2

Hiked the rest of the Wildcat Canyon trail, which turns into Lava Point. Then started the West Rim Trail. Did about 15 miles total this day, lots of elevation gain. We had reserved a campsite on the West Rim Trail.

Day 3

Had to backtrack a couple miles on the West Rim Trail to a spring to get more water. Then we started the descent through a bunch of canyons and ended up at Scout’s Lookout. You can either continue descending or go up to Angel’s Landing. We tacked that on, amazing but crowded. Then hiked down to the Grotto (18 miles total from Lava Point if going straight there) for the shuttle pick up and went back to our car. We then drove to the Visitor’s Center to park, took the shuttle back in, and did the East Rim Trail. Hiked in about 2 miles and set up camp.

Day 4

Went back into town and got some actual food. Did about 5 miles (RT) of the Narrows. Stopped off at the Hanging Gardens on the way back through the canyon, then headed out of the park and got a hotel for the last night.
